BEST AUTHORITY LIGHT EDITION SOFTWARE
New Simplified Version of Table of Authorities Creation Product
Offers Basic Functionality with Lighter Training Requirements and Cost
November 1, 2007 – Leesburg, VA. Levit & James, Inc. today announced the release of Best Authority Light Edition, a less expensive and lighter-featured version of its popular Best Authority software product. Best Authority Light allows litigation attorneys and staff to create a Table of Authorities (TOA) – a list of citations in a legal brief – with far less work than manual marking or other software-based methods.
Whereas Best Authority Premium Edition offers interactive dialogs for editing the Table of Authorities, users of Light Edition work directly in the final TOA to make revisions, using Microsoft Word as their editor. This typically reduces training time to about an hour for most users with prior TOA experience.
Best Authority Light Edition feature highlights include:
- Automatic scanning of the brief for citations – upon scan completion, citations are marked by color according to citation type. Suspected citations with errors are flagged for potential correction. Quoted citations and “Mentions” (cases cited by name without a reporter) can optionally be excluded from the TOA.
- Draft and full-page reviewing of the TOA – including a unique split-screen interface so users can simultaneously view the brief and the TOA as they scroll through citations
- Quick and easy building of the TOA
- Ability to customize styles, schemes and dictionaries

Many organizations will prefer to purchase Best Authority Premium Edition (formerly known as the flagship Best Authority product) rather than the Light Edition for the following reasons:
- Users who produce TOAs more frequently will benefit from efficiencies provided by Premium’s Advanced Feature Set, and will find the additional training time paid back rapidly.
- Law practices with certain specialized requirements will need Advanced Features. For example, courts in certain Midwestern states require a combined Table of Contents/Table of Authorities (known in Illinois as a Table of Points & Authorities) which can be easily created with Best Authority Premium Edition.
- Organizations with a centralized IT or training staff will likely need to use the Premium Edition’s administrative functions, which distribute standards through the network and which provide for control of user permissions through Active Directory.

Best Authority Light is offered at a flat rate of $225 per license. Levit & James offers Light Edition customers 100% credit toward purchase of the Premium Edition if they subsequently upgrade.
