Software for Building Tables of Authorities
Best Authority makes building a Table of Authorities (TOA) in a Word document as simple as building a Table of Contents with the best Numbering Toolbar. It provides extensive easy-to-use features that allow you to quickly construct and format a TOA to meet the needs of any attorney or court. Unlike other products, Best Authority provides an easy-to-use Interface that guides you through each step of the process. With Best Authority, you don't have to be an expert in Word to create a perfect Table of Authorities.
Ø Step One -- Scan for Citations
Best Authority begins by scanning a document for citations. L&J has developed an advanced text mining technology that will yield a much higher percentage of citations than existing tools. When the scan is done, it has permanently stored all TOA information in the document, using the TA Field feature provided in Word. The TA Fields become a database of information for building a TOA. Most importantly, Best Authority provides fully-featured Reviewer and Editing Tools for easily making corrections to this database, before you build your TOA.
Ø Step Two-- Review the Scan Results
The Full Page Review provides a quick and easy way of reviewing the citations found by the scan. As you page through your Word document, all citations found will be highlighted in a user-specified color. An easy-to-use Interface allows you to unmark any text which is not a citation and should not be in the TOA, or mark text that may have been missed by the scan and should be included as a citation. Even on a long document, this is easy and fast. All corrections you make to citations are permanent, and will never have to be done again, even if you make substantial revisions to the document!
The Draft Review generates a draft of a TOA in the Word document. The Word screen is split, with the draft TOA at the top and the document in the lower half. The purpose of this review mode is to allow a user to see exactly what information will be included in the TOA, and then make any edits or changes required. Once again, our easy-to-use Interface guides you through any edits or corrections you wish to make. Just like the Full Page Review, all corrections you make will never have to be done again!
Ø Step Three -- Build Your Table of Authorities
When your review and edits are completed, you build a TOA with as little as two mouse clicks! Best Authority provides extensive features to control every aspect of the formatting of a TOA. Preferences for formatting the TOA are stored in a Scheme. By accessing shared or private Schemes, Best Authority will quickly build a TOA to the exact format specifications of an attorney, a firm, or a court. After a TOA is built, you can either make changes to your formatting options, or select a different Scheme, and rebuild the TOA until it accurately reflects the desired result. Unlike with other products, the TOA can be placed at any location inside the document, and page numbers in the TOA will always be correct!

Best Authority was released in June of 2006. There are now 80 law firms using Best Authority, including a number of the largest law firms in the United States.
Ø Licensing and Pricing
Licensing for Best Authority is based on the total number of authors (litigator, appellate, bankruptcy, and other attorneys) whose documents will be processed by the software. It may then be installed on as many PCs as required. Licensing is not based on the number of PCs on which Best Authority is installed. Pricing will be in the range of $200-$300 per license, depending on the number of licenses purchased.
